Evening Talks and Special Performances
Hear experts in fields such as architectural history, art history, historic preservation, art conservation, Vizcaya’s history, and Miami history.
Conservations
Did you know that Vizcaya's owner, James Deering was an environmentalist? In 1914 he made the then unusual decision to locate Vizcaya's main house directly on Biscayne Bay, specifically preserving the rockland hammock (native forest) for us today. In addition, when planning and creating Vizcaya's gardens, he preserved the mangrove shore and was committed to retaining native plants and vegetation.
Join us for a series of conversations on conservations! This series of public programs will expose you to the environment at Vizcaya and inspire you to continue Deering's preservation efforts and share in his delight of Miami's subtropical environment.

Panelists:
Sanjeev Chatterjee, Producer, Co-director, and Writer, One Water
Ali Habashi, Co-director and Editor, One Water
Kenny Broad, Director, University of Miami Leonard and Jayne Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy
Ian Simpkins, Chief Horticulturist, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
One Water is a film that celebrates all the myriad ways water has touched human lives around the globe-and explores our changing relationship to water as it grows ever more perilously scarce. The film highlights a world where water is exquisitely abundant in some places and dangerously lacking in others, where taps flowing with fresh, clean water are contrasted with toxic, polluted waterways that have turned the blue arteries of our planet murky. One Water leaves audiences with a series of provocative questions that culminate in one that will impact all of our futures: is water a human right or a commodity?
Refreshments will be available for purchase.
General Admission $15; free for students with valid ID.
Entry and General Admission available starting at 6:00 p.m. on the evening of the program only. Seating is limited.

The program features three Cage pieces from 1975 through 1977 and an original composition, specially created for Vizcaya by So Percussion.
In addition, join us for a pre-performance workshop where you can create your own naturally inspired instruments and then join along in the concert that follows. Afternoon of Music on Vizcaya's Historic Pipe Organ
With Remarks from Radio Show "Pipedreams" Host
Michael Barone
Sunday, February 28
Free with paid admission
On Sunday afternoon, February 28, visitors can enjoy music from Vizcaya's original 1917 three-manual, 23-rank Welte-Mignon pipe organ via its original roll player. From 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., American Public Radio's "Pipedreams" show host Michael Barone will share his thoughts on the importance of residence organs in early 20th century homes, along with cameo appearances at the console by visiting organists.
Guests will be hear light classics and other favorites from more than 88 music rolls purchased by James Deering when he built Vizcaya in the early 1910s. Selections are 15 minutes long and will be played at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 p.m.
The organ console is located in Vizcaya's living room (sometimes called the "Renaissance Hall) where presidents and popes have been entertained. The room accommodates up to 25 people, standing, but the organ can be heard throughout the entire residence, including the very large interior courtyard.
Now in its 26th year, "Pipedreams" is a weekly national show, with a devoted audience of 250,000 organ music lovers and distributed to 150 public and commercial stations by American Public Media of St. Paul, Minnesota. Host Barone said in an interview with The New York Times, "I'm just trying to open a door in an inviting way to provide access to this marvelous realm of thoughtful, passionate, soothing, exciting, delicious, brainy and blissful music."

Contemporary Arts Project
Through this program, Vizcaya reaches out to the artist community both locally and nationally – to offer artists the opportunity to explore our resources and think about them in new ways. Two artists per year are invited by an advisory committee to immerse themselves in Vizcaya’s grounds and collections, create a work of art in response to that experience, and participate in public programs such as studio labs, demonstrations, and artist talks. The creative exchange that will result from this program will help to demonstrate Vizcaya’s contemporary relevance to our community and beyond.
